12) HOW TO FIND SUPPORT IF NEEDED
When the pandemic started, all countries switched to online education in a very short
time but they were unprepared to meet the needs of all students from software and
hardware to support services. In a short time, most countries set up systems to support
teachers and students at all levels. Online education is a highly complex construct that
includes concrete issues such as infrastructure, content and material as well as abstract
issues such as motivation, attitude and self-esteem.
Successful online learning demands much more of students than understanding how to
navigate a learning management system (LMS). It can be argued that the need for deliberate
attention to providing support is even more critical to the success of online students than those
on campus because of their greater diversity, greater need for self- management and technical
self-efficacy, information literacy and the potentially isolating impact of the online learning
environment. Helping students become autonomous self-regulated learners requires an
explicit effort on the part of institutions to both understand the challenges presented by online
learning and how they can help students develop the skills to meet them (Brindley, 2014).
As students, you need to be aware of the opportunities and services offered to you
regarding online education and when you need help, you need to ask. Learning attitudes
are connected to the support that students receive from peers, teachers and families.
