4.6. ONLINE SECURITY
It is very important for students to ensure privacy and security during online education. Since
you will be on your phone, tablet or computer for most of the day, you will be more prone to
cyber security issues. Hence, you need to pay attention to security measures. First of all, you
need to have secure passwords for all the platforms or tools that you are using. Make sure that
your passwords are unique and do not give any personal information about you such as your
name, age or your pets that will make it easier to guess your password. Do not use the same
password for all your accounts such as mail, web 2.0 tools because if your password is
hacked, it can be used in other accounts as well. Also, remember to change your passwords at
regular intervals.

When you are finished with your work or activity, log off on your accounts, especially if you
are using the school library or an internet café. If you are always using your own computer or
tablet make sure it is password protected as well in case you lose it or it is stolen.
The privacy and security settings on your accounts are very important. Make sure to set
privacy settings to disable strangers from reaching you. Allow only the people you know well
to communicate with you.
Make sure that your software is up-to-date and use a protection program against viruses. You
should be aware of phishing attacks and you should never click on links or open attachments
from unknown sources. You should also take back ups of your work stored on your computer.
Please remember not to share any personal information online such as your address,
information about yourself or your parents and banking information.
As a final note, never meet in real life with people you met online. If someone you meet
online wants to meet or talk to you on the telephone, inform your parents or teachers. Do not
accept gifts as well.
